After
leaving Dundee we took the train to another famous city on a river,
Glasgow. Also following our nautical theme we visited the Burrell
Collection, which is housed in its award winning building in 360
acres of “Pollock Estate” just outside Glasgow. Here there were
nearly 9,000 works of art from ancient Egypt and all over the world
dating right up to the 20th century.
Sir William Burrell was a shipping magnet and made a huge
fortune. His passion was collecting artifacts as diverse as oriental
ceramics, gothic art textiles arms and armour. Before he died in
1958 he gave everything to the City of Glasgow to form the
exhibition. By 1983 a
specially commissioned building had been constructed and the public
were given free access. Included are a café, restaurant, lecture
theatre, museum shop and free guided tours.
We thoroughly enjoyed the collection, which even on a quick
visit took several hours to walk round

We
flew back down to London on a drab, cold January day.
The
photo to the right above shows Fae boarding the ScotAirways
plane at Dundee. One hour ten minutes later we flew over the
top of Canary Wharf tower and landed back at London City
airport.
