Much restoration is under way, and many areas have already been rebuilt. At the door there were shawls for women tourists to cover their legs. As we walked into the courtyard the great copper bells hung on a huge wooden frame.

A model vineyard has begun to produce the once famous Alypiakos wine not made for over 150 years. To bring in additional income tsipouro, olive oil, honey and traditional confectionary is also being made on site. As we walked round, there were no other tourists, and the sound of chanting came from the chapel as several people attended a service. Inside through the darkness I could see the rich glitter of gold lit by candlelight and the robes of the Abbot as he attended his congregation.
